The LOCOMACHS project aims to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of new part production manufacturing and assembly operations of composite and hybrid aero-structures parts. To achieve the ambitious LOCOMACHS objectives, it is necessary to gather expertise in a wide range of skills, and, in order to reach the highest possible impact, the main stakeholders in the field.

The LOCOMACHS Consortium has been drawn up in this spirit and gathers 30 partners covering the full range of the value chain, from early design and development (process, method, software and hardware tools providers), to skills and facilities needed for manufacturing and assembly. Such a coherent set of competencies would be very difficult to find at national level with the same level of expertise in all fields.

The consortium include:

  • Prime OEM aircraft manufacturers, as well as several tier-one and tier-two suppliers to European and overseas prime OEM aircraft manufacturers.
  • Research institutes like Airbus Group Innovations, DLR and NLR, that will provide state of the art knowledge within composite material and manufacturing. Other institutes like the MTC and TECNALIA will contribute with research skills and hardware for demonstrations within the area of assembly automation.
  • SME companies like Prodtex and SONAXIS have unique competences within assembly tooling and NDI/NDT respectively.
  • Universities from several European countries, each of them internationally recognized for the quality of their scientific work,  like ENS Cachan and CTH, who possess the most advanced computer aided systems and skills for geometrical variation management.

Organizational Activities

École Normale Supérieure de Cachan (ENS Cachan) is a prestigious public institution of research and higher education, founded in 1912. It is one of the French “Grandes Ecoles” which are considered to be the pinnacle of French higher education. With its multidisciplinary departments and their associated research laboratories, École Normale Supérieure de Cachan provides its students with a high-level cultural and scientific training. Research staff is: 60 CNRS researchers, 200 researchers/professors, 80 technical and administrative staff, 300 Ph.D students and 60 post-doctoral students. ENS Cachan is specialized in training students for teaching and research. Fifty percent of French assistant professor in the field of mechanical engineering graduated at ENS Cachan. Two research labs of ENS Cachan will be involved in the project: LMT Lab (Mechanics and Technology) is one of the recognized leaders in composites and computational mechanics research activities. During the last ten years, the group had an intense activity in the modelisation of assemblies of composites structures including several kinds of uncertainties and defects. LURPA Lab (Research in Automated Production) research fields cover models and methods related to production engineering. The topics focus on products design, manufacturing processes, assembly processes, dimensional measurement and automated system control. The national and international recognition particularly concerns the domain of geometrical variation management along product life cycle.

Role in the Project

In the LOCOMACHS project ENS Cachan is participating in the following WPs: WP12: simulation models for flexible tolerancing, WP31: metrology and validation of assembly model for flexible tolerancing and WP43: virtual demonstration of flexible toleancing and validation of numerical tools. Within WP53 ENS Cachan will carry out training of end-users on the use of flexible tolerancing tools. Due to its knowledge on the flexible tolerancing strategies and its training of teachers’ capabilities, ENS Cachan is the perfect institution for the organization of training activities on the use of engineering tools for flexible tolerancing: on-site training activities for end-users, workshops.
