The LOCOMACHS project aims to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of new part production manufacturing and assembly operations of composite and hybrid aero-structures parts. To achieve the ambitious LOCOMACHS objectives, it is necessary to gather expertise in a wide range of skills, and, in order to reach the highest possible impact, the main stakeholders in the field.

The LOCOMACHS Consortium has been drawn up in this spirit and gathers 30 partners covering the full range of the value chain, from early design and development (process, method, software and hardware tools providers), to skills and facilities needed for manufacturing and assembly. Such a coherent set of competencies would be very difficult to find at national level with the same level of expertise in all fields.

The consortium include:

  • Prime OEM aircraft manufacturers, as well as several tier-one and tier-two suppliers to European and overseas prime OEM aircraft manufacturers.
  • Research institutes like Airbus Group Innovations, DLR and NLR, that will provide state of the art knowledge within composite material and manufacturing. Other institutes like the MTC and TECNALIA will contribute with research skills and hardware for demonstrations within the area of assembly automation.
  • SME companies like Prodtex and SONAXIS have unique competences within assembly tooling and NDI/NDT respectively.
  • Universities from several European countries, each of them internationally recognized for the quality of their scientific work,  like ENS Cachan and CTH, who possess the most advanced computer aided systems and skills for geometrical variation management.

Organizational Activities

Created in 1978 SONACA S.A. is today the parent company of a group on entities located in Brazil, Canada, the United States and China. As a partner of AIRBUS for more than 25 years, through the BELAIRBUS company, the SONACA Group develops, manufactures, assembles and tests the wing leading edge slats and associated ice protection system for the whole AIRBUS A320, A340 and A380 families and is now involved in the A350 program. As participant of EMBRAER programs for 15 years, SONACA is in charge of development and manufacturing of slats of the E170/E190 family and the Legacy 500, of the fixed leading edges of the EMB135/145.  SONACA was also involved in DASSAULT F7X business jet program through the development and the manufacturing of the slats and the fixed leading edges.  For Bombardier, SONACA develops and manufactures the fixed leading edges of Learjet 200 and the slats, the fixed leading edges, the actuation system and the ice protection system of regional aircraft BD500. Several research projects, mainly sponsored by regional authorities, have been or are still led on these technologies, driven by cost reduction and automation.  Between others, combination of some different technologies is studied.  Then, non destructive testing techniques are evaluated according to their cost and productivity. SONACA is also designing, stressing and manufacturing hybrid composite/metallic structure, namely multilayered skins for anti-icing system on slats or trailing edge assemblies.  In parallel, SONACA is active in structure and process modelling, as well as in research activities on product life management.  Furthermore, SONACA is currently implementing the lean manufacturing for all the manufacturing and engineering activities.

Role in the Project

Within LOCOMACHS SONACA will participate in developing tools and process to manufacture composite components with better geometry control and to reduce assembly cost and time. SONACA will contribute to WPs 21, 32, 43.
