To eliminate the ‘non-value added’ activity associated with aerostructure assembly (i.e. strip & de-burr) by utilising novel automation technology to conduct the drilling operations. There are a number of automated systems in production

Advances made in LOCOMACHS

The removal of the strip down and de-burr activities will dramatically reduce the wing assembly cycle time compared to the prevalent manual process. However, the technology has not yet been assessed to TRL4 and so the savings cannot be quantified.

Contribution to LOCOMACHS High Level Objectives

  • Design and manufacturing rules defined and validated
  • Increased use of tolerance and variation management
  • Reduced recurring costs of shimming operations
  • Reduced recurring costs of dismantling operations
  • Reduced recurring costs through increased automation
  • Reduced NDI/NDT lead time
